How whitefox helped Serena Hassan raise awareness of climate change in schools through the creation of an illustrated children’s book

The problem

Serena approached whitefox with a children’s manuscript inspired by her experience of witnessing the effects of plastic pollution in London. She was on a mission to educate young readers about climate change. With a 19,000-word manuscript, Serena was looking for expert consultancy, editorial and design services to perfect her manuscript for a young audience and fill it with engaging illustrations. She also wanted the support of an experienced PR and sales team to make sure her important message reached young readers and their parents. The whitefox team were excited at the opportunity to teach young readers about the environment, and had just the illustrator in mind to bring Serena’s story to life…

The solution

whitefox’s consultancy team met with Serena to discuss her publishing journey, and it was decided that 19,000 words would become nine bespoke picture books, edited by whitefox’s development, copyediting and proofreading experts. Next, whitefox began creating the perfect illustrations to complement and enhance, rather than distract from, Pigeon’s important message. Working with illustrator Jon Davis, Pigeon was brought to life with engaging integrated illustrations. Jon even created some small graphics for Serena to use on social media to attract new readers.

For such an important message, the perfect PR and marketing team was essential. Serena worked with whitefox’s in-house marketing team to create some informative videos and get started on social media, while whitefox’s publicity partners Midas used their extensive network to get The Tap-Dancing Pigeon of Covent Garden onto multiple digital media platforms.

The result

When Serena first approached whitefox, she had two goals: to create a beautiful, bespoke children’s book, and to teach children about the importance of protecting the planet. One year since publication, and both expectations have been met!

Serena’s powerful message has had an impact on readers far and wide and seen Serena travelling all over the country to talk to children about climate change in bookshops, schools and libraries. The Tap-Dancing Pigeon of Covent Garden has gained wide coverage on radio, social media, in magazines and even on Sky News! With dozens of 5-star Amazon reviews, Serena’s debut children’s book continues to sell well. And, who knows, perhaps we’ll hear from Pigeon again soon…

‘Self-publishing with whitefox has been a really smooth ride. The team have been really proactive and helpful and I believe and trust in the knowledge and experience that they have. I know they will make my book as successful as they can.’ – Serena Hassan
